Leadership Recognition

Students

Our intermediate students develop leadership and advocacy skills through our nutrition break classroom monitor program, as well as the distribution of milk and juice to students. Intermediate students can participate in Student Council where they organize events for their peers and support the community through various charitable activities. The new Baking for Change Social Justice Club plan to raise funds for numerous causes including the “Adopt a Village” program. Our Spirit and Character Team take an active leadership role in our school Spirit Assemblies modelling and celebrating positive character. The Reel Cool Productions video crew is responsible for creating our school-wide videos and work behind the scenes to produce amazing events. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we also acknowledge the contributions of our students in announcements, newsletters, Principal’s Report to Council, assemblies and year-end ceremonies.

Staff

Our staff includes teachers, early childhood educators, educational assistants, office staff, custodians and administrators. At WOM, all staff members are part of our “team”. Staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications in a variety of subject areas. They regularly participate in Board-wide professional development activities as well as professional development workshops offered at the school. Our staff members are involved in mentoring new teachers and assisting staff new to WOM. We recognize staff initiatives by providing and supporting opportunities for further professional growth. We also recognize staff leadership via personal notes, thank you letters, announcements, assemblies, newsletters, performance appraisals and the Principal’s Report to Council.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Volunteers are essential to the delivery of strong academic programs in our school. Volunteers work tirelessly in classrooms assisting inpidual children and small groups of children with literacy and numeracy skill acquisition, helping to prepare materials for classroom lessons and activities, assisting on field trips, running the Primary Games Club, helping to keep our library in good working order and assisting with our lunch program. Our School Council supports the school through continuous fundraising for resources to help children at all ages: library books, novels for literature circles, science materials, sports equipment, kindergarten toy renewal, musical instruments and more. School Council also extends support to Crystal Bay Public School. Our family support exemplifies the proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child.” As invaluable partners we thank our parents, guardians and volunteers on an on-going basis and look for opportunities to acknowledge them in our announcements, assemblies, newsletters, our Principal’s Report to Council, and our volunteer appreciation event.

Community

W.O. Mitchell is supported in many ways by a helpful and enthusiastic community. In past years, local businesses have helped us laminate art work and provide materials for science experiments, art work and special events. They also support the school through direct financial contributions. Community volunteers from universities, colleges and organizations such as OCRI, share their time and expertise in support of our programs. Community groups like the Kanata Youth Basketball Association rely on the W.O. Mitchell facilities to host their youth basketball program outside of school hours and they make generous donations towards the purchase of gym equipment. The Boy Scouts meet weekly at WOM. The City of Ottawa after school program operates every school day. We recognize our community partners through announcements, newsletters, assemblies and our Principal’s Report to Council.
